Act like you're ready to purchase if the price sounds right. If they ask you if you plan on trading in a vehicle at this stage just tell them you're not sure yet, but you want to know the lowest price they will go on the vehicle you want to purchase. After you get to a certain dollar amount then talk about a trade-in you would like to know how much they're willing to give you. At this stage the car salesmen will try to push you to commit to buy. Don't fall for it and once they come back with a final number tell them thank you, but you have to check a few more places before committing to anything. Be prepared to walk out. Don't worry you'll be hearing from them and they'll try everything to keep you there.

Follow-Up

If you gave them any contact information they'll be contacting you trying to pressure you to purchase the vehicle. Tell them the price on the new vehicle is too high and what they offered you on the trade-in is still too low. They'll put you on hold more than likely and come back with a new number. If the number makes sense make a counter offer and tell them that's what you need. They'll put you on hold again and will usually meet you half way.
