Car-Care Tools You Need

To Tighten, Screw, and Loosen

MB
Your car breaking down on the highway isn't something to look forward to. Avoid car problems by investing in some simple, inexpensive tools. Everyone should keep a few tools in cases of emergencies.

A set of screwdrivers is a good item to have in the trunk of the car. There are two types of screwdrivers that you can purchase. A Phillips head screwdriver has an "x" on top. The flat head screwdriver has a straight blade like this like an "l" shape. Having these tools are essential. Changing the oil, replacing air filters, claps inside the engine, screws on the door panel, etc. all require screw drivers.

Newer cars are using a different type of bolt. Besides the typical Phillips head and flat head screwdriver you'll likely need a set of torx screwdrivers. They are designed to allow more twist when trying to tighten a screw. Plus, the new screws are shaped like a flat star, so they other screwdrivers wont fit anyway.

An adjustable wrench is the king of car tools. Anywhere there is a bolt on your car a wrench can fix it. Don't settle for a cheap version of the adjustable wrench. You need a high-quality tool because it's important.

A pair of vise-grips is always handy. When shopping for this tool look for the brand name Vise Grip. The "VG" tool will grip onto anything you want it to. There is an adjustable screw element that allows you to loosen or tighten around any sized object. Once you lock the vise-grip in it wont budge. Great tool for dealing with rounded bolts and tight spaces.

A set of wrenches is needed because all of the bolts are different sizes. It's better to be safe then sorry. Make sure to buy the right measuring system, since wrenches come in metric and standard. Most cars use both which can be a little frustrating.

A ratchet set also comes in metric and standard fittings. Ratchets are extremely great for those tight spaces where big manly-hands can't fit. The ratchet offers a speedier way to tighten and loosen a bolt.

These are just the basic car tools you need to repair your car. Throw out low-quality tools and invest in some good ones. Tools only cost around $45 for this list. Keep everything under the hood and in the passenger compartment tight. Prolong the life of your car with some simple maintenance!

    Thanks for the tip.

Believe it or not, my womanly hands work with tools, and they don't fit in tight spaces, either. Inclusive language is a good thing.
