Car Review: 2010 BMW Z4 Roadster

Serge Pupko
Remember the first generation BMW Z4? It was as out-of-balance as can be. Yes, it had a sinister look and a hood full of engine, but it was also very ugly. I couldn't look at it from the front, I couldn't look at it from the side, I couldn't look at it from the back, I couldn't even look at it from bird-view. It was ugly in ever respect. So when I hear of the new up-coming Z4 a couple months ago, I thought it was going to be the same story. Oh boy, how wrong I was!
The new BMW Z4 is restyled to look like nothing I've ever seen with a folding metal roof. Yes, there's Ferrari California, but let's just discuss the sort-of affordable stuff. I can look at it now! And the biggest difference is, I don't have to close my eyes to make it look better, it already look its absolute best! It's modern, it's got the right curves, the right details, and just overall very nice to look at. But it does also make a statement. Like the previous Z4, this one looks like an absolute maniac, yet maintains a good look. It's still a killer, but this time, not dressed like a zombie.

The power is there too. The petrol engine range starts at the Z4 sDrive23i which produces around 204 horsepower, and continues up the list sDrive35is which produces 340 bhp with a help of a TwinPower Turbo technology. Keep in mind that this car weighs just under 1.5 tons, so whatever you go for, it'll be a rush. And that is really all you need to know, isn't it? BMW is about the ultimate driving experience because it is, as we know it, the "ultimate driving machine."

As far as transmissions go, you can have a flappy-paddle gearbox, but you can also have the good-ol' 6-speed manual gearbox, or as I like to call it a proper gearbox. The reason I'd go for a manual gearbox is because it weighs less. So you have more power at your right foot.

This is turning out to be a great car, but we're not done yet, because there is another surprise BMW has to offer: an M badge. Yes, the Z4 can now come in an M trim. That will give you quite a few M badges, bigger wheels, and a sportier feel. Just think of it as BMW throwing in their best ingredients together to create a masterpiece.

You're not short of luxuries either. You get some fine German leather, BMW's idrive, lots of power, and the world of air, wind, and noise. Not a bad combination. But the price tag is pretty heavy because the Z4 roadster starts at $46,000 for a base, and if you want the sDrive35is, you'll have to pay upwards of $51,000. And don't forget that BMW is notorious for ripping you off. That means they'll throw options and accessories at you. But, I think if I were in the market for one, I'd just get that twin-turbo charged sDrive35is, and pay for no accessories because you don't need anything else. You've got one of the best looking cars in the world, and that much power! I wouldn't ask for anything else.

I've been into cars for a long time now. It started as a little kid when I started drawing cars for fun. My cars, though, did not have guns and fins on them, well, most of them didn't, to say the least. I fo...  View profile
