Car Reviews: 2005 Volkswagen Golf

A Fun, Versatile Car at a Reasonable Price

John Galt
It has often been said that all it takes is a single car purchase to create an enthusiasm with a particular make or model. However, while this definitely can happen, sometimes the type of car that is required to create the bond must be very high quality. Still though, while there are many popular makes and models of vehicles on the road, one of the ones which seems to inspire the strongest brand loyalty is none other than Volkswagen. While this may seem a bit strange at first, the love the VW owners feel for their vehicles often becomes apparent and easy to understand as soon as one has sat behind the wheel of a car. And, perhaps there is no better example to point out this strange effect than the 2005 Volkswagen Golf.

From the outside, it is easy to see what has made the Golf such a universally appealing vehicle. Although it is easy to notice the car, and the design definitely stands out, it is not overwhelming, nor does the car look childish or cheap. From the typical VW front end, to the slightly curved headlights, the subtle lines of the body on the side of the car, and the nice looking hatchback design, there is really nothing to complain about when it comes to the design of the Volkswagen Golf. While some might feel that it comes off looking a bit conservative compared to the GTI, it would seem only natural that design changes have to made when comparing a two door model to one with four doors. However, perhaps the biggest complement to the Golf is the fact that it looks good, even with the four doors and incredible amount of space on the inside. Unlike some larger cars, which require the owner to sacrifice design and good looks for space, the Golf manages to fit everything into a more compact, stylish and fun looking package.

The Golf can easily seat five adults comfortably, and there is plenty of room in the hatch for anything you might need to store, whether it be groceries or luggage. The rest of the interior is great as well, and perhaps most of the "fun" aspect of the car can be found in the design, look, and feel of the interior of the car. From the leather wrapped steering wheel to the soft, blue glow of the inside gauges and dials, to the simple way in which the center console is positioned to give the driver easy acess to every option, there is really nothing not to like about the Golf. The seat offers plenty of options and can be adjusted in anyway that one wants, making sure that no matter your size or shape, you will be able to see the road clearly and drive comfortably. Driving the Golf is easy, fun, and the interior is perhaps the single largest factor that contributes to those feelings, everything about it seems perfectly designed and ready to make the dirver feel as comfortable as possible. While some may complain about the overall quality of the interior materials, considering the cost that one can now buy a 2005 Golf for, and those complains don't really seem to mean a whole lot.

However, while the interior and exterior are definitely nice aspects of the car, nothing really compares to how it feels when one really drives the car. From the quick, ready feel of the pedals, to the effortless, smooth turn of the steering wheel, the Golf just feels fun and sporty from the moment that one turns the key. There are various engine options available from the car, from the 2.0 liter base, to the 1.8 liter turbo, and no matter which choice one makes, they are not likely to be disappointed. Even though the Golf is not a light car, each engine options responds with surprising power and performance when the time comes, especially if the model happens to be equipped with the five speed manual transmission. Add the nice engine performance with the excellent handling, and we have a car which not only looks and feels good, but it also a top notch driver. The Golf just feels great to drive, and at no point does it ever feel as if one is struggling to move the car around or that it is taking effort to control it.

Quite simply, nearly every aspect of the 2005 Golf is positive. The car is well designed and nice looking on the outside, comfortable and interesting on the interior, and a real beauty when it comes to driving. If one is searching for a little bit of a larger car, that still allows them to have some fun, and offers plenty of comfort and interior room, the 2005 Golf may very well just be the perfect car.

Sadly, 2005 was the last production year for the Golf, although the GTI continues to be made.
