First, it is important to consider everything that you will be using it for, now and later on. Here are some ideas to think about: Will you be using an iPod hook-up? Will you be using a different MP3 player to hook up? Will you want to add a sub or two now or in the future? Will you need a cd player? Will you need some other type of plug-in? Make a list of what you are looking for before you go shopping. Knowing everything that you will need will help you get what you need without getting more than you need.
Second, go check out some shops. I like Best Buy because I can get my installation right after I purchase the product. there are usually a dozen or so smaller car audio shops around each city. If you want a more personal touch then check out some your local shops. The brands will vary from store to store, so do not just buy the first deck in the first store that you come across.
Third, ask for opinions, There are sound specialists at these shops for a reason. They usually have a pretty good idea what they are talking about. Just let them know what you are looking for and what you need it to do. If you do not like their opinion, then at least you will know what they thought about it. Also, try asking some of your friends if any of them have bought decks. See what they liked or what shop they went to. Recommendations always help.
Fourth, purchase it! If you plan on getting it installed right after you buy it, make sure you have enough money to cover the installation and the extra wires that are required. This can cost anywhere from $50 to $200 depending on what you bought, the wires required, and their installation cost.
Fifth, show your friends and family what you got. Half the fun is showing people that you upgraded your car. Sometimes you can even inspire others to get their car systems upgraded. Let them know how you found the deck that you wanted and where you bought it.
Even though this is a process, it is great to get it done. I have never regretted upgrading my deck. So good luck with your purchase, enjoy it!
