Carb Depletion

Laura Munion
Carb depletion is a process of getting rid of carbs stored in the body. This is achieved by eating a diet low in carbohydrates for a period of time and exercising to deplete the stores of carbohydrates in the body.
Carbohydrates are stored in the muscles and liver as glycogen.
By consuming a reduced level of carbohydrates the body will need to tap into the glycogen stores for energy to fuel the body's activity.
Some fitness enthusiasts think that by depleting the body's stored carbs, the body will be more efficient at storing carbs during the carb loading phase. Both techniques are utilized by some endurance sport athletes.
