Carbon Credit, the New Cash Crop for Oklahoma Farmers
The director, Sarah Love, states OCI offers 100% verified carbon credit. The Oklahoma farmers agree to sustainable practices. This is because carbon is trapped in soil as plant life absorbs it to offset carbon emissions.
Carbon Credit in Geary, Oklahoma
Landowners in Geary, Oklahoma planted trees along a stream which earns $100,000 to offset carbon emissions from Western Farmer's Electric Cooperative. Currently, the price for a ton of carbon is about $4 per ton on the Chicago Climate Exchange, CCX.
However, since the EPA announcement in April, things may change. The EPA states carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases are pollutants that threaten public health and welfare. We can expect to see regulations which could require zero carbon emission from industries. This is good news for farmers who sell carbon credit.

According to the EPA, agriculture contributes to 6% of carbon emissions nationwide. However, Oklahoma soil is deplete of carbon with a content of 1% so Oklahoma needs carbon in its soil. Because of this, emissions trading with Oklahoma farmers is a win/win solution.
Carbon credit practices for farmers:
1. Commitment: Farmers commit for several years to follow guidelines. Independent groups check them.
2. No-till Farming: leaves stubble from last year's crop and planting new seeds beneath it. This sinks carbon into the ground instead of plowing which releases carbon.
3. Plant Grass: because grasslands take in more carbon than land for ranching or farming. Only grasslands planted after 1999 qualify for carbon trading.
4. Sustainable forestry: is more planting and maintaining older trees than farmers cut down to earn carbon trading credit.
5. Rotate Grazing: helps cattle destroy less grass and sink more carbon. Degraded range land when restored is available for carbon credit.
