There are many ways to start carbon offsetting such as planting trees and donating to projects that provide alternate sources of energy like a wind farm. If you are able to offset the total amount of carbon you reproduce then you are considered to be carbon neutral. There are many organizations out there that help calculate how much estimated carbon you produce. They can also help you find projects and organizations to donate to. Once you start contributing to these types of projects your carbon footprint starts to decline.
Some environmentalist don't like the idea of carbon offsetting because its an easy way out. They feel we should do more ourselves instead of donating money to have it done for us. That is a good idea but its not reality. Its much easier for people to get motivated to help the planet if they don't have to change their daily lives. Carbon offsetting works because it also bring awareness to those who choose to participate in it. Most people don't just donate and then say "well that's all I can do". They look for other ways to help such as recycling and making their homes more energy efficient.
The three main types of carbon offsets are tree planting, renewable energy and energy conservation. Each one helps reduce the pollution that causes global warming. In addition to that tree planting also helps restore natural habitats and renewable energy helps us to use less oil. By carbon offsetting you can be much more helpful to the planet as a whole.
Our carbon footprints are often much bigger than we imagine. Not only do we produce carbon everyday we also buy products that produce even more carbon everyday. Every thing we have from the foods we eat to the car we drive has its own carbon footprint. If you start carbon offsetting and reducing carbon production in your own life now then over time you will become carbon neutral. That is where we all need to be.
