Most Cardinal Fitness locations are set up in a basic store front and consist of one section of cardio machines and one section of free weights and machines. I'm not a big fan of weigh lifting, but I often found that section of the gym to be relatively empty. The cardio machines, on the other hand, were often crowded, though I never had to wait long for a machine. My particular workout location, in Palos Heights, IL, was always refreshingly cool and had a good variety of TV shows playing on the overhead TVs.
Another highlight of the gym is the cleanliness. Workers at Cardinal are constantly striving to keep the gym and the locker room spotless. The locker room offers large wooden cabinets to store your good; however, I'd recommend bringing a lock to protect your valuables. Other amenities include fresh towels and disinfectant, a magazine rack, and the option to sign up for personal training sessions.
The best perk and value of Cardinal Fitness is obviously the price. For a single member, it only costs $19.95 per month to work out. Couples can expect to pay $31.95 per month, and families of three pay $38.95 per month. My boyfriend and I were able to purchase a couple's membership, which was automatically billed to his credit card each month. Cardinal Fitness also makes cancellation easy; all you need to do is to write a letter to the front desk explaining that you want to cancel.
Fans of aerobic classes may be disappointed to see that not all locations offer classes; however, most locations will have a schedule near the front desk. However, if you choose to take a class at another location, a nominal fee is charged that day. With the price of gas these days, I imagine that this offer may seem less attractive to customers.
Above all, Cardinal Fitness provides a good deal for a minimal amount. With most gym memberships costing double this price, Cardinal does provide a nice option for customers. Again, this is not the gym for those who are looking for a massage or Pilates class, but it will give you the chance to stop in and burn some quick calories.
