Cardio, Sculpting, and Dance Combine in New "Body Rock" DVD

Joanne Eglash
I own an embarrassing number of exercise and fitness DVDs, from dance to yoga to Pilates to step aerobics to kick boxing and more! The reason is simple: I belong to a gym...but I hate to drive. So my DVDs are my way to handle those attacks of the "I feel guilty because I should exercise but it's too cold...or too rainy...or I'm just not in the mood to go to the gym!"

The Catch-22 to my at-home collection: it takes something special to get me motivated to really MOVE. Most of the time, I put on the DVD, do some of it, get bored...and turn it off. Humiliating but true! Hey, I'm human, too. So when I put on the most recent candidate for my interest, the "Get Extremely Ripped! Body Rock" DVD by Jari Love, I was willing to give it a try to catch my interest.

What I liked about this DVD:

1. Lots of different workout sections. I could pick and choose which ones I wanted to try out, and skip others. For example, I enjoyed the jazz and hip hop dance routines that got me movin' and groovin' early in the morning. I felt bored by the disco dance segment, but it was easy to skip.

2. Good variety. I could quickly switch from dancing to working my biceps and triceps, then go back to high-intensity cardio, then hit the thighs and seek to slim down in time for summer swimsuit weather!

3. The instructor, Jari Love, is easy to follow and makes fitness fun. Unlike some video teachers, she didn't babble throughout the entire DVD, keeping her instructions focused and limited to what would help. Too often, a DVD exercise teacher tends to talk and talk and talk and TALK to the point where you want to tone her out -- or turn it off!

Motivating fact about Jari Love: she was once 50 pounds overweight herself! So she FEELS our pain when we've gained weight, and she seems especially empathetic because of her own background. In addition, Jari took the time to develop the "Get Extremely Ripped!" series with a physiologist and a physiotherapist, to keep the exercises safe and effective. As the saying goes...it works if you work it!
