Career Reinvention: From Full-Time Military to Full-Time Freelance Writer and Paralegal

Maggie OLeary
I recently changed careers after fourteen years in the same career field. I served my country on active duty in the United States Army for the first four years of my military career. I then switched branches to the United States Air Force for the remainder of my active duty time. A lot of things are happening in our lives that caused me to decide not to re-enlist on active duty, and instead start my career as a full-time freelance writer and part-time military Reservist. I also attend school full-time, finishing up my degrees in Military History and Legal Studies.

The switch was relatively simple for me and my family. When it came time to re-enlist, I simply turned down the Air Force's nice offer and contacted a local Air Force Reserve recruiter. When my active duty contract ended, my Reserve contract began. I now serve my country one weekend per month, two weeks in the summer (or whenever it fits into my schedule and my unit's mission), and any other time that my unit needs me.

After my active duty time ended, I started ramping up my writing efforts. I had already been writing on a part-time basis with several websites, so I began submitting more content to them. I also went in search of private clients, and have landed several in the last couple of months. I also do some freelance paralegal work when the writing world is a bit dry for me, which thankfully hasn't happened much.

In addition, the switch in careers has been very inexpensive for me. I already had a computer with internet access, plenty of paper and pens, and business cards for my writing business. I didn't have to invest any money into an office or storefront, or extra education or classes. I just picked up my wireless keyboard and started typing.

All in all, the switch in careers has been a major blessing for me and my family. I am now here with my kids all day - I make breakfast for them each morning, drop them off at school in the morning and pick them up in the afternoons, and help them with their chores and homework. I am also here with our two rescued dogs who need lots of love and understanding to overcome the abuse and neglect they suffered before they found their way to our family. And I have plenty of time to work with several local canine rescues and help other needy dogs. Plus I get the freedom of being my own boss, doing two jobs I love - writing and serving my country, and making a comfortable income for my family. This switch has been the best thing I could have ever done for my career, and I encourage anyone who is thinking of switching careers to go for it.
