According to the New York Times, "the president chose a well-regarded 50-year-old lawyer who served as a staff member in all three branches of government and was the first woman to be dean of Harvard Law School. If confirmed, she would be the youngest member and the third woman on the current court, but the first justice in nearly four decades without any prior judicial experience."
Elena Kagan's Career
Kagan has been serving as the Solicitor General of the United States, since she was appointed by Obama in January of 2009. She was the first woman appointed to that position. Early in her career, Kagan served as a law clerk for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall. She later became a professor at the University of Chicago's law school. Kagan then joined the White House as a Deputy Domestic Policy Director. She returned to academic life to serve as the Dean of Harvard Law School until her appointment to the position of Soliciter General.
