Careers that Can Handle a Recession or Downsizing

Kathleen Lynn
There are certain careers that can handle a recession without feeling it. The question most people ask is what are they and how are they achieved.

Healthcare professions will always have a place in the world. There will always be a demand for intelligent, educated professionals in this field. Doctors, Nurses, Pharmacist, and Physical Therapists are some examples of specific careers in this profession that should continue to be in demand during an unstable economy. Illness and Disease does not distinguish between the rich or the poor.

Teachers and educators will always have a job market as well. Looking back in history, farmers at some times in history were less well off than what we consider middle class in this century, and yet, there were schoolteachers.

Those interested in majoring in the area of Criminal Law will always find themselves in a stable job market as well. Crime will happen regardless of current market trends. As crime is always happening there will always be a need for police officers, prison guards, and other professions in this field. An important note to consider on this field of employment is that layoffs are much less likely to happen because there are usually shortages in this field of work.

Another field to note that remains fairly stable in economical trends is positions for the federal government. These range from college education jobs to those with fewer credentials. The federal job economy is always in somewhat of a demand. Federal jobs can be anything from a military professional to an accountant.

Lawyers will for the most part survive economic twists and turns. This is another area where there is always a need for the services.

For those looking for a stable career that might not involve the college degree, collection agents and morticians are a few stable options. Note that each state has its own requirements to license as a mortician and one may need some form of higher education. Grocers and farmers will always have a job in the economy. Another stable career would be in utilities, even if people cut down on usage, they cannot function without using them at all. Most utility careers can be entered without higher education.

I guess there would be a high demand for collection agents in a recession. Good recession proof jobs listed here.

I never thought of morticians as having job security in a downturn, but you are right!
