Careers in the Psychology Field

There Will Be Many Opportunities for Psychologists in the Coming Years. .

Matthew Schieltz
Many psychology students in colleges and universities may have dreams to be the greatest psychologist ever. Some may even be wanting to change the world after they receive their college degree. The fact of the matter is that there are plenty of opportunities for those with advanced psychology degrees and the options are almost limitless when it come to what one can do with his or her psychology degree.

Clinical Psychology

A large part of the psychology field is in the helping field of psychology. These psychologists who are in the business of wanting to change the world usually want to do so through counseling and psychotherapy. There is certainly no shortage of clinical psychologists being needed in today's world. For example, many of the soldiers coming back from war will often show symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Psychologists need to be ready to treat these individuals when they come back and seek out help.

Furthermore, more employers are creating their own staff of psychologists to make counseling and psychotherapy readily available for their employees. When you have healthier and happier employees, more work tends to get done in the office and the atmosphere is lighter and friendlier. Using psychologists in the workplace to be there for employees when they need psychological support is one issue that has taken hold within the past few years and is growing in popularity.

Other opportunities for clinical psychologists lie within themselves. Some clinical psychologists choose to open up their own practices and offices, treating clients in a patient-therapist relationship. There is plenty of money to be made by opening up your own private practice, however, should not be the main goal behind doing so.

Industrial/Organizational Psychology

This is also a field which is gaining in popularity. There are plenty of opportunities for these types of psychologists also. This field of psychology is more research-oriented and focuses on studying how large groups of people behave in work settings. They will often be involved in creating and helping to design training sessions for employers, as well as research and study the many types of work and group behavior.

No matter what type of setting you choose to work in while in the psychology field, there will be plenty of opportunities in the coming years for psychologists to work at what they are passionate about. Psychologists will always be there to give a helping hand to those who need counseling and psychotherapy, as well as developing systems and research-oriented solutions to the problems that are presented before them.
