CareFRESH Colors Pet Bedding

Not Exactly What it Seems

Traci Brown

CareFRESH colors pet bedding is made from all natural items and claims to help controls odors for longer, making changing pet bedding easier on the owners.

CareFRESH began as a brownish looking, soft bedding safe for pets to chew on. This bedding also has a big advantage over pine and cedar bedding because it does not give off any odors that are harmful to respiratory systems. Just recently, CareFRESH released the Colors line, containing colors such as blue, pink, orange and others.

CareFRESH is dyed using materials that have been used in homes around the world for over 40 years. The colors are color fast and will not stain pets, clothing, cages or fingers. The bedding and colors are also non-toxic making this a wonderful bedding to use in a home where small children may live.

The bedding is easy to use and very soft. There are no chips of wood or sharp edges that you or your pet may injure yourselves on. The directions say to line your pets' home with 1-3 inches of the bedding. And since the bedding is natural, is flushable safe in small quantities. If you are not comfortable flushing it, you can just take it out with the trash.

The usual recommendation for cleaning pet cages is once a week. However, with CareFRESH, the bedding may need to be changed earlier. In my experience with this bedding, it does not keep cages and homes smelling fresh longer. I use this bedding for male pet mice, which need to mark their territory often, which in turn makes their home smell. I purchased CareFRESH hoping to keep their cage smelling better longer so the need to change their bedding wouldn't have to be twice a week to ward off odors. However, this bedding does not control odors longer and needs to be changed as often as all the others.

The bedding however does absorb more water and waste quickly than regular beddings. Before I changed over to a regular water bottle for my mice, they used to drop or kick bedding into their water cup. Before long, all the water would be soaked up because of the bedding. So if you are looking for a product to absorb water and wastes, this definitely does the job.

If you are in line for a cheaper bedding, I would avoid CareFRESH as prices usually range about $7-$9 for a bag of 10 liters (or 9 dry quarts) of bedding. CareFRESH can be purchased online from some pet stores, and in major pet stores such as PetSmart or Petco. Each stores websites respectively carry the product as well CareFRESH's regular bedding and CareFRESH Ultra.

CareFRESH can be used for small pets, rabbits, ferrets, reptiles and birds. As always, impaction and related problems are possible with any type of bedding. If you suspect this contact your vet immediately.

Overall, I like CareFRESH bedding because of it's fun colors which makes any pet home more lively looking, and it's safe for everyone. However, if you are looking for something cheap and something that will suppress pet odors, find another product!
