Supplements
Glucosamine supplements are one of the most effective treatments for dogs that develop arthritis or other joint disorders, including hip dyplasia. Glucosamine is usually combined with Chondroitin, a sulfate that naturally occurs in animal cartilage. Glucosamine and Chondroitin supplements have anti-inflammatory properties and increase the synovial fluid in joints. They can often be added directly to your dog's food and may be used as a preventative as well as a treatment. Glucosamine and Chondroitin supplements are considered very safe for dogs, but dosage guidelines should be closely observed.
Omega 3 supplements have also been shown to improve joint health in aging dogs. Omega 3 is a natural fatty acid that has many health benefits for dogs aside from improving joint health, such as protecting against heart, liver and kidneys diseases, as well as some forms of cancer.
Accommodations
Taking care of a dog with joint or hip problems may require some special accommodations. Dogs with hip or joint problems should not jump out of cars or off couches, so you should consider getting ramps to help your dog navigate more safely. Stairs may be challenging for dogs with arthritis or hip dysplasia, so additional ramps may be necessary if the dog needs to go up and down stairs in your home.
A special orthopedic bed can help cushion the sensitive joints of arthritic dogs. These are available from pet supply store such as Petsmart. Giving your dog warm blankets in his bed may also help to ease the pain of arthritis.
Lifestyle
Some hip and joint problems are caused or aggravated by weight problems. If your dog is overweight and is suffering from hip or joint problems, one of the most effective treatments may be to manage your dog's weight by switching her to a healthier food and feeding less at each meal. Daily gentle walks are also beneficial for dogs with joint problems, but too much activity or infrequent walks can worsen the condition.
Medical Treatments
If your dog's hip or joint problems become too advanced, your veterinarian may recommend surgery. There are several types of surgery for dogs with hip and joint problems, which range from fusing or manipulating the bones to complete hip replacements. Surgery is an expensive option for the treatment of hip and joint problems, but in some cases it may be the best option. Talk to your veterinarian if you think your dog may require surgery for his hip or joint problems.
Alternative Treatments
Alternative treatments have also been shown to improve the quality of life of dogs with hip and joint problems. Acupuncture can be used to relieve the pain of arthritis and joint problems. Canine massage is another good alternative treatment. You can learn canine massage from a professional and use it at home to help comfort and heal your aching dog.
