As I sit at my computer, I am noticing my dog stealing glances my way. It's almost as if he is saying, "Are you about done?" It's nearly his walking time and he is making sure I don't get so involved that I forget about him. Working from home is a balancing act between your job and your family, and that includes the family dog as well. Make sure that you don't ignore your dog.
Companionship is not Always Enough
My dogs always lay close by while I work. Most of the time, my dogs are content to lie beside my chair. After awhile, that becomes boring for them and I know it is time to take a break and give them a little attention. Think of it in terms of how you feel when your spouse or significant other sits in front of the television for hours. The two of you may be in the same room, but soon you will feel bored and ignored.
Your dog feels the same way after watching you work for hours at a time. You didn't really think working from home came without compromises did you? It may be more convenient then commuting, but there are added responsibilities. You can work from home and keep your dog happy. When it appears that your dog is getting a little hyper or is just giving you those sad looks, it is time to take a break.
Doggie Breaks are Good for Both of You
If you work at a computer like I do, it is healthier to take frequent breaks and get up and stretch anyway, so you might as well spend that time with your dog. It doesn't have to be a lot of time, as your dog will be happy with even just a few minutes of playing or cuddling.
Take your dog outside for a short walk or a game of fetch. Not only will he enjoy it, but you will find that the fresh air will make you feel better as well. You'll both come back in refreshed and you'll jump back into your work with more zest.
Don't rush potty breaks. Unfortunately, we become so absorbed with our work that we may find a potty break an annoyance. "I am busy, you'll have to wait," is not a very good option for you or your dog.
Don't act angry because you have to take the dog outside to do her business. She may decide it is not a good idea to ask you next time. This could result in an accident on the floor that you'll have to clean up. Wouldn't you rather take a break in a more pleasant way?
Find Other Ways to Avoid Ignoring Your Dog
My office chair is pretty big and my dogs are small, so they can easily share my chair or lap as I work. So long as I reach down and pet them occasionally they will lay quietly for awhile. If your dog is too big for that and lays or sits beside you as you work, don't forget to reach down and pet him.
.
Sometimes when I am doing research for an article or reading over my own work, I'll toss one of my dog's toys for them to fetch. I can continue to work, yet they think I am playing with them. It doesn't take much to break their boredom, or make them feel less ignored.
Glance at your dog from time to time, as you work. If you are getting that forlorn puppy dog look, it's probably time for a break. Less stress is one of the reasons you decided to work from home, right? Give yourself and your dog a well deserved break. You'll both feel better. Speaking of puppy dog eyes -- .it's time for that walk.

Mine know when quitting time is, and if I go overtime more than 10 minutes they will come over and start scratching at my legs.
