Malayan Box turtles were on the verge of distinction until recently because of the over collection of the turtles for food markets and medical markets. Now that their numbers have risen, the Malayan Box turtle's one of the many species of turtle to be active in the world of pet trade. However, this is only true if they are purchased from a breeder or pet store and not captured from their natural habitat.
Care for Malayan Box Turtles
Adult Malayan Box turtles typically reach 8 to 12 inches in length. With proper care, they can live long and happy lives in a domesticated setting. Malayan Box turtles can be kept indoors in an aquatic environment.
While they do spend a large portion of their time in the water, they do come on land to eat. These turtles need a large aquarium or a small child's pool for proper care. Although they thrive in an aquatic environment, they are poor swimmers and should be kept in only a few inches of water. They should be able to stand out of the water so they can breath freely without difficulty.
There should be a land build up on one end of the habitat at a slant for easy access to the land. If your habitat does not include a filtration system, frequent water changing will be needed. The water temperature should be kept about 75- 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
Because the Malayan Box turtle enjoys basking, they should have an ideal supply of logs and other objects to float on. They will need UVB florescent lighting to supply them with the adequate supply of Vitamin D3. This is needed for calcium metabolism.
Diet for Malayan Box Turtles
Malayan Box turtles are relatively easy eaters and aren't very picky. They should be fed lightly once or twice per day. The turtles like earthworms, as well as live small fish for a special treat. Live fish are especially great to provide because they offer the turtle mental stimulation and exercise.
Malayan Box turtles also need adequate vegetation and Koi or Catfish food can be given. Greens, insects, and fruit should be offered regularly. A cuttlebone should also be made available for the turtles. If a full diet is not provided, extra vitamin and mineral supplements may need to be given.
