Caring for Permed Hair

Jessica Rowe
Not all of us have hair that will hold a curl. For example, my hair us long, fine and straight with a few natural waves. I have had many perms, professional and home perms. None of them lasted very long.

I did everything right. I waited to wash my hair, used proper shampoo, conditioner and styling products. Still the curls would go flat, within a month my hair would be a mess. I love the curly look, but have accepted that it is not right for my hair.

There are however, many who have hair that will accept a perm, luck you. To keep a perm looking great you have to take care of them. Caring for permed hair is not hard to do, it is rather easy.

First off, after you get your perm you do not want to wash your hair or really brush it for the first 24 to 48 hours. You stylist will most likely tell you this. Your hair needs time to set and adjust to the chemicals.

When you are able to wash your hair, be sure to use shampoo and conditioner for chemical treated hair. Biolage, Infusium 23, Herbal Glo, Frederic Fekkai and Garnier Fructis are all good brands to use.

Chemical treatments can be rather harsh on hair and need aftercare. Only wash your hair with it is dirty or soiled. Be gentle and use appropriate hair products. Doing this will help your perm to last longer.

After washing permed hair, towel dry it gently, making sure not to rub the towel around on your hair to much. If blow drying use a diffuser to spread heat evenly, and only dry till about 90% done, then let the rest air dry.

When brushing your permed hair use a pick or a wide toothcomb. Start at the ends and work your way to the roots, making sure to be gentle and not to tug. Detangler can be used if needed.

Style hair using styling products for chemical treated hair. Many of the already mentioned shampoo and conditioner brands, have styling products as well.

With your hand, gently scrunch your permed hair daily. After using styling products is always a good time. Doing this will help in keeping your perm looking bouncy and beautiful.

Finally make regular appointments to get your hair trimmed. Every four to six weeks should do the trick. This will keep your hair healthy, and add spring to your curls by removing some of the weight at the ends.

When taken care of, a perm is beautiful looking and can last a long time. Space your perms out to give your hair a chance to regain its health. Getting perms done often may cause permanent damage to your hair. This goes for any chemical treatment as well.
