Caring for Tomato Plants

Shannon Frye
Like many other plants you will need to get the ground moist and sift through the dirt before planting the plants. They like rich and moist soil. Tomatos will likely get eaten by rabbits and other animals so you will need to place something around the plant to keep the animals out and away from the plants. You will want to make sure you are getting the right tomatos that you want because there are many different varieties of tomatos. Make sure that you don't plant the tomato plants until after the last frost.

You will need to make sure that you buy your plants from a reputable source otherwise you may have to plant more tomato plants. Some of them may die or not grow as fast as the other plants. You can add nutrients to the dirt in order for them to grow bigger, faster. You will also want to make sure that you plant them at the right time or they will not live.

If you place mulch around the plants the ground will stay more moist than if you place rock or dirt around the plants. This will help on the number of times you need to water the plants. If you notice that the dirt is getting dry you will want to water the plants. They should usually be watered at least every day if you haven't gotten any rain. Keep an eye on the dirt and as soon as you see it getting dry you can place a sprinkler near the plants for a short period of time.

If you see some type of insects that are eating your plants you will want to see what the bugs look like so you can identify them. Once you know what they are you can determine how to get rid of them. Otherwise plan on planting a plant for the bugs and a plant for yourself.

Your plants will need to have some type of support for the branches and the fruit as soon as it develops. Otherwise the plant will begin to tilt and fall over. This will also work in keeping animals like rabbits away from your food source. People eat tomatos but they also use them for tomato sauces. Just make sure that you know which type of tomatos that you are planting. Cherry tomatos are very small and have a somewhat bitter taste compared to most tomatos.

My tomato plant is 5foot tall and still growing. I have pruned it like the videos stated. But I have no tomatoes. I do get the little yellow buds, but they disappear, and still no tomato. What can I do to produce tomatoes?
