During his career as actor, film director, producer, writer and comedian, Carl won nine Emmy Awards.
He was the son of bessie and Iriving Reiner who worked as a watchmaker. His parents were Jewish immigrants and were proud of their heritage.
Carl worked as a machinist fixing sewing machines, but he credits hi brother Charlie, for changing his career by looking in the new York Daily new s about a free dramatic workshop. Carl attended the school of Foreign Service of Georgetown University. He served in the United States Army during World War II.
Carl performed in many Broadway musicals such as Inside U.S.A., Alive and Kicking, and Call Me Mister. By 1950, he was cast by Max Libeman in Sid Ceasar's Your Show of Shows.
In 1959, developed a TV pilot called Head of the Family. The network didn't like Carl as the lead role. The show was retitled and recast as the The Dick Van Dyke Show and it was a hit.
He began his directing career on The Dick Van Dyke Show. When the show was over, Carl's first film was adapted from Joseph Stein's play "Enter Laughing". Carl widely worked on several movies juggling the duties of writer, director, producer and actor. His best known films early in his career are Where's Papa and Oh, God!.
Carl helped Steve Martin with his career by directing and co-writing The Jerk, Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, The Man with Two Brains and All of Me.
In 2000, Carl was awarded the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.
He has appeared as thief and con man Saul bloom in Ocean's Eleven, Ocean's Twelve and Ocean's Thirteen. Then, in 2004, he lent his voice to the animated lion Sarmoti in the animated TV series Father of the Pride.
He has written several books such as My Anecdotal Life: A Memoir, All Kinds of Love, Tell Me a Scary Story, but Not Too Scary, and How Paul Robeson Saved My Life among others.
