It is located in a historic building built in 1796 in New Orleans' French Quarter on the corner of Decatur Street and Toulouse Street. Carmelo's has all the charm of the Italian history also shared in New Orleans rich past.
The chef, Jerry Curtis worked under the direction of Master Certified Italian Chef Ciro Cuomo. He created an exceptional menu for Carmelo Ristorante. Some of the specialties include hot or cold antipasto, homemade pasta and a variety of veal dishes. While you are there, don't forget to ask about the chef's specialty of the day.
The cuisine at Carmelo's isn't just enjoyed by tourists though; locals have also been coming here since the renovation of the restaurant was finished in 1989.
That is why I decided this restaurant was a must on our to-do list while in New Orleans.
The décor and atmosphere in the restaurant makes you feel like you just walked into a charming little ristorante in Italy. The balcony on the 2nd story overlooks Decatur Street and the Mississippi River. Beautiful dining experience if it isn't too hot and humid for you to put up with.
For lunch I shared the calamari appetizer with my Mom. It is tradition I always have that on or around my birthday. I have to admit that the calamari at Carmelo's was one of the best I've ever had. It ranks right up there with calamari I had in Key West, Florida.
For my entrée I had the chicken parmesan panini. It was superb! It was cooked perfectly and seasoned flawlessly. My Mom had the meatball sandwich, which she raved about as well. Our waiter said that was the favorite meal Regis Philbin gets when he eats there.
Peter, our waiter was excellent. He was charming and very knowledgeable on all of the food served there. He also was an excellent person to ask about local attractions and other random topics about New Orleans.
The only thing I didn't like about the restaurant was that there is only one bathroom available and it was near the kitchen. It was clean though and not too small.
Overall, I would highly recommend Carmelo Ristorante to anyone visiting the French Quarter in New Orleans that loves Italian food. However, even if you didn't love it - I bet you would by the end of your meal here!
