Carolina Hurricane's Rod Brind'Amour and His Hockey Career

BS
You could guess by Rod Brind'Amour's name that this pro hockey player isn't from the United States. Rod Jean Brind'Amour was born in Ottawa, Ontario in Canada on August 9, 1970. He is currently thirty-eight years old, and one of the oldest hockey players in the NHL. Rod Brind'Amour is 6 feet and 1 inch tall and weighs 205 pounds. Rod Brind'Amour's hockey career began in 1986 when he played for the Notre Dame Hounds in the SMHL (Saskatchewan Midget Hockey League). In the 1987-1988, he played with the Notre Dame Hounds in the SJHL (Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League). Rod Brind'Amour went on to play for the Michigan State University for part of the 1988-1989 season. During that season, when he was only eighteen years old, Rod Brind'Amour was drafted by the St. Louis Blues, 9th overall, which is very impressive.

Rod Brind'Amour immediately started playing with the St. Louis Blues in the 1989-1989 season. A great deal of hockey players spend time in the AHL (American Hockey League) before they are called up to play in the NHL, but not Brind'Amour, he actually has never spent any part of a season in the AHL since he was drafted. Brind'Amour remained with the St. Louis Blues until the 1990-1991 season and then moved on to the Philadelphia Flyers for the next season. He spent a great deal of time with the Philadelphia Flyers, being a part of their team until the end of the 1999-2000 season.

In the 2000-2001 season, Rod Brind'Amour joined his current team, the Carolina Hurricanes. During the 2004-2005 NHL Lockout, Rod Brind'Amour went overseas to play for the Kloten Flyers in a Swiss league. When the lockout was over, Rod Brind'Amour returned to the Carolina Hurricanes. Brind'Amour is currently the captain of the Carolina Hurricanes and was with them when they won the Stanley Cup in 2006. Although he has been with them since 2000, his 2007-2008 season was cut short when he tore his ACL and had to have surgery, but he was back with his team the next season.

Rod Brind'Amour is quite an impressive player. In 2006, he made his 1000 point in his NHL career with all of his goals and assists counted up. The following year, he reached his 400th career goal. In 1992, Brind'Amour was awarded the Bobby Clarke Trophy, which is given to the most valuable player of the Philadelphia Flyers each year. In both 2006 and 2007, Rod Brind'Amour was the recipient of the Frank J. Selke Trophy. This award is given to the forward who shows the best understanding of the defense aspect of the game. It is safe to say that Rod Brind'Amour has had quite an impressive hockey career, and it's not even over yet.
