Caroline Lavelle - Eclectic Classical Folk Artist

Review & Biography

Shan-Lyn Forsythe
Caroline Lavelle is a British singer-songwriter and cellist who has, thus far, had quite an eclectic musical journey with very impressive results.

Having been influenced at a tender young age by her grandfather who was a conductor, Caroline later left home at 15 to study at the prestigious Royal College of Music in London. Though she was classically trained and fully expected to pursue a career in classical music, the gods of destiny had different plans. Like a wandering free-spirit, she branched out to create a unique track away from the classical expectations imposed upon her when young.

Interviewed as saying, "I want to stand on my own devices, to make more of a difference than to be sitting halfway down in a cello section playing the same old things most of the time. The creativity involved in writing one's own music and having to marry lyrics and arrangements is much more challenging for me. My greatest love is writing."

Her busking in London, often outside Kensington Tube Station and Covent Garden from the early to mid-eighties drew attention, where she was noticed by Frankie Gavin, a founder member of Ireland's De Dannan band. Switching over and being part of the band up to the early nineties, Caroline then worked and played alongside Mary Black and Dolores Keane, both notable Irish singers.

From this point spawned forth her involvement with an array of some of the most renowned names in the music industry such as Loreena McKennitt, Peter Gabriel, Vangelis, Massive Attack, Hector Zazou - just to name a few - aside from the making of her own discography. (A rundown of her discography and collaborations with other groups and artists are included at the end in alphabetical order.)

What distinguishes Caroline from other artists is her passionate and emotive nature, with a sensuously captivating and exquisite voice which beckons the most timid of listeners to reach out. One is left with the impression that something wondrously turbulent within her is struggling and seeking to unfold a magical reality, likened to a flower that has been touched by the warmth of the sun rays, as she weaves her captive audience into a spellbinding honest creativity of richly poetic lyrics.

In 1992, after Caroline's contributing vocals and cello to the track "Home of the Whale" on the Massive Attack EP Hymn of the Big Wheel, this brought attention to English musician and record producer William Orbit who became inspired in 1995 to produce and mix her debut solo album Spirit, where one track from that album - Moorlough Shore - has become a video popular on YouTube. Caroline self-produced two later albums, Brilliant Midnight (2001), which had three further tracks added after a year's time, and then A Distant Bell (2004).

Caroline Lavelle is working currently with Justin Elswick and Israel Curtis on her fourth album.

She's not that great of a singer when you really listen. She's a very good actress. She missed her calling at MGM studios.

Todd I don't have to back anything up because its true. I will not post it again.

Hey Ex-Employ, can you back your statement with facts? These two singers are just friends. The only thing I agree with is that Caroline Lavelle can excel more for the reason that she has the stronger influence and is very seductive when she wants to be. Rock on Caroline!

Typo: It is Loreena McKennitt that would not know what to do WITHOUT Caroline .

This is a wonderful review of Caroline! I tend to agree with Ron. Caroline Lavelle CAN empower an audience. She has the looks, the talent, and can easily be the dominant one on the stage. I suspect that Loreena McKennitt and Caroline are good friends but if chips were placed on the table Caroline knows very well she could steal a show in her favor very easily. It is Loreena McKennitt that would not know what to do with Caroline and that would be a test for LM. In retrospect, Caroline always did shine more. Could LM play without her? I don't think so. I find it a shame though that Caroline isn't accelerating herself more. She has the class, power of influence, et cetera and I think she knows this about herself also. I can't see how people could think that without LM she'd be nothing? Let's get real. Caroline has it all. If Caroline is there, LM depends on her. Not vice versa.

This is a very nice review of Caroline Lavelle. I beg to differ with some comments that other people have written. I think that if Loreena McKennitt wouldn't have Caroline it would be McKennitt that wouldn't be as popular. We all know that Caroline steals the show and isn't it obvious? Caroline has proven to make it out on her own and if she would just put more energy in believing more in herself she would have excelled beyond Loreena McKennitt a long time ago. It's Caroline that helps Loreena out, not the other way around. I'd be very surprised if McKennitt would still be so accomplishing if Caroline wouldn't be there. Something we'll never now until it happens I suppose. Overall, this is a very good review.

I don't know much about her but felt your article was well written and gave me info to explore her music further. Thanks!

Dear David T.: Caroline is presently on tour with Loreena McKennitt and has been very busy. They have just completed the Canadian Tour and are about to embark on the U.S. Tour. Taking this into consideration, time will tell when she'll be available for an actual "Interview". Thank you! ;-)

I agree she has a very sensuous voice but I'm still trying to figure out what genre of music she prefers. I also agree with Jeffrey below that if Loreena McKennitt wouldn't help her out I don't think she'd be as popular as she is today. She still has to prove that she can make it on her own. Good review though.
