Carol's Story of Faith Part 5

Susan Meets Carol

Cindy Tuttle
Susan opened the door to see Carol hooked up machines. She looked so frail. She had beautiful long hair but couldn't have weighed more than one hundred pounds. Her eyes were closed and almost looked like a little angel. Susan went to her and gently said ," Hi Carol, I am Susan your new social worker. I wanted to visit to find out how your are doing."

Carol slowly opened her eyes. They seemed to show a longing for love. With Susan she felt reassured and sensed her empathy right away. " Hi Susan. Maybe you can tell me how I'm doing. I feel very tired and my heart hurts, but my spirit is good. I know I will alright. Jesus is with me."

Susan didn't know what to say. She seemed to have such faith and optimism. She didn't want to diminish her hope in any way.

" Well, the Doctor said you may have to stay in bed for a period of time so your heart can become stronger. I will help you find a place to live when you are discharged. You don't have to worry about where you will go. I brought you some clothes and your Bible."

Her eyes lit up. " Thank you!How did you know I was wishing to have my Bible? I read it every day. You are so nice to come and see me. It won't be hard staying in bed. I will have a chance to read and pray, and that won't be too bad. Why do you look so sad?"

Susan was embarassed that Carol was picking up on her concern and worry about her surviving.

"Oh, I'm just so sorry you had to go through this experience. But I know your faith will help you. Is there anyone you would like me to contact for you?"

This was the first time Carol looked depressed as she said" Well no I guess not. There was soneone but I don't want to talk about them right now. I feel tired. Do you mind if I go to sleep?"

" No Carol. That's fine. Your body needs rest. Would you mind if I stayed with you the rest of the day and tonight?"

" You would do that for me?", Carol looked appreciative and surprised.

Susan smiled as she said," I wouldn't want to be any other place. I will either be at your bed, in the looby,or the cafeteria. Go ahead and sleep if you can.

" Thank you so much. I" Carol wasn't able to finish her sentence as she fell asleep.

Susan was about to call her supervisor when she noticed a woman outside the door looking in. She seemed shy and when Susan saw her the woman quickly moved back. Susan was curious and walked towards her.--To be continued tomorrow.
