According to the film's IMDB page, "Soul Surfer" depicts a young teenage surfer girl who "summons the courage to go back into the ocean after losing an arm in a shark attack." AnnaSophia Robb plays the teenage surfer. Robb is also famous for her role in the film "Bridge to Terebithia."
The cast also includes Dennis Quaid and Helen Hunt as Bethany's parents, and Craig T. Nelson as Dr. Rovinsky.
The trailer for "Soul Surfer" is available at Entertainment Weekly. The trailer begins with a feature of AnnaSophia Robb as a promising surfer. Her friends invite her to go surfing during a full moon, but her mother isn't sure about letting her surf at night.
The decision proves to be costly, as she loses her arm in a shark attack. After being rushed to the emergency room, the doctor explains that her life is going to change drastically. Bethany is, of course, devastated. We see clips of her ripping off her Barbie doll's arm.
We also see a glimpse of Carrie Underwood, as a church group leader, explaining that sometimes we don't know why these things happen, but how it is important to have faith that something good can come from it. Bethany returns to surfing, more determined than ever. And she has become an inspiration to people worldwide. One boy writes her a letter telling her how he had lost his arm, but that she had inspired him to try out for his school soccer team.
The "Soul Surfer" story seems to fall in a similar vein to the 1991 film "Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken," based on the story of Sonora Webster, a girl who gains the courage to dive again after losing her sight in a horse-riding accident. "Soul Surfer" is also inspired by a true story.
Carrie Underwood is the latest "American Idol" alum to venture into movies. Jennifer Hudson won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in "Dreamgirls." And Kelly Clarkson and Justin Guarini starred in the disaster "From Justin to Kelly." Fortunately, the film did not cause long-term damage to her tremendous career.
Carrie Underwood seems suited for the role as a youth group leader because of her Middle America girl next door charm.
"Soul Surfer" premiers in theaters nationwide on April 8. Are you planning to see this movie? Do you think Carrie Underwood has the chops to succeed on big screen?
