He finally eyed her, stooped amongst the marigolds that bordered their garden plot. She had such strange ways; Leonard just helped her with turning up the soil in the spring, and left her to her own devices after that.
He sees Carrie talking aloud. "Who's she talkin' to now? There ain't nobody out there to have a conversation with, no how." But he already knew she was talking with her auras and nature spirits.
She had told him about these people in Scotland who managed to grow a beautiful garden in the sand. They produced thirty-eight pound cabbages-all of their produce was larger than life.
Still, he thought she made everything too complicated. She treated her plants like they were people. She had to make sure they all got along, and best friends would have to be next to each other. Carrie adored her growing things so much; she didn't even bother to take out the weeds, save for dandelions. Dandelions, she said, had bad gases that weren't good for the other plants.
"Carrie and her aura fairies." He chuckled to himself.
He decided to go over and sit down at the kitchen table. There was her garden notes and watercolor paintings - The Inspiration of Findhorn Garden, it said in big letters. He began leafing through the big pages with colorful auras all around the gardens. He saw some photos thinking they might have been doctored, but they sure looked like they were for real.
Colors like halos, pink, blues, and purples surrounding each and every garden row, and then a picture of a hand with the same ring of more colors leaping and spiking outward. He read the caption - "Kirlian photography."
"What'll they think of next?"
She would talk to the weeds, and tell them to behave. And somehow, it worked. She tells them if they are mean to the other plants that she won't allow them to live in the garden.
She saves an untouchable place right in the middle where the fairies can stay. But usually, it's just a toad family that stays in the little lean-to thing she had concocted. Or maybe they're all in there together sharing auras who knows?
"Dang woman. She don't even allow me blow out candles. She's always burning some happy smelling stuff, and has to have the house just right for sniffing. Ha, ha. Sniff all you want, but just be sure to snuff the candles, so the fire fairies don't get mad at us."
He leafs through another page and sees some kind of a weird photocopy. It looks to be a lilac tree branch shooting off a yellow color like a candle. Then he sees two lilac leaves with completely different lights.
"Hum-mm, what's the difference? He looks at the captions. Oh, one is sick and the other's healthy. Guess I better start my own lunch so's I can be healthy, too. My aura lights are going on low glow."
