Carroll Gardens Building Collapse
Neighborhood: Carroll Gardens
Brooklyn, NY 11231

October 12 was a bad day for fourteen residents of a Sackett Street building in the Carroll Gardens neighborhood of Brooklyn.

The timing couldn't be worse. Just after a freak hail storm in Brooklyn Heights and torrential rains, the façade of the three-story building collapsed leaving the tenants homeless. The red stucco building apparently couldn't take the moisture and pressure from strong winds.

At first, the building boasted a crack which expanded just before suddenly splitting the façade in half. The fire department was called to secure the area as remnants of the building fell to the ground. All residents were safely evacuated. Fortunately, there were no injuries due to the collapse.

Though the crack initially appeared just after the storm, officials aren't so sure the storm is completely to blame. The Department of Buildings is investigating further despite the fact that the rest of the building being structurally sound.

The American Red Cross is currently helping the fourteen tenants find temporary housing.
