Carrot Top at the Luxor in Las Vegas

Come Prepared to Laugh... And Maybe Even Get a Little Wet

Suzanne Rose
When going to Las Vegas, I knew I wanted to see two things. A Cirque du Soleil performance, and at least one famous person that I liked. I was planning to see The Amazing Jonathan since my husband and I both loved his Comedy Central special. However, I read many bad reviews and my Uncle said that his act sucked. Apparantly Jonathan has not updated his act at all since Comedy Central, and even worse, my Uncle said he didn't even seem to CARE about his act anymore. So we nixed those plans and keep looking.

Out of the blue I got an email saying Carrot Top was performing at the Luxor. I always thought Carrot Top was funny on his TV specials. In addition, my uncle and cousin had seen Carrot Top when he was stationed in Michigan and they thought it was the best show ever. Of course, I had to go.

Getting Tickets
I started by shopping for tickets online at the luxor website. Amazingly, it said the first and second row seats, right in the center, were still open! I couldn't believe it seeing as the show wasn't too far away, so I called the ticket office and she assured me those seats were available for Sunday night. I booked two tickets in the second row center for approx $65 a ticket. That really isn't a bad price as I've paid the same for comedy shows that come to my town.

You have to pick up your tickets at least an hour before the show or else you might lose them to someone else. We went to the Luxor a few hours early to get our tickets and grab a bite to eat before the 8 PM show.

Our Seats
You may wonder why we sat second row when first was available. I was afraid that being in the first row we might be picked on or something similar. Once I got to the theater, we was very happy with our seats. The first row seats were actually a bit below the stage level so they had to look up to see the show. Second row was basically right at eye level with the stage and I thought that was perfect.

The theater is small, so I would say ANY of the seats would be good seats. I think there were only about 14 rows are so. If you want to save a few bucks, go ahead and pay less for seats further away. If you want to stay dry, pay more for the closer seats. There's a part of the show where people get wet, but not the first few rows! The whole room was filled, every seat taken, so don't expect to buy tickets too close to show time. I've heard you can get half-priced tickets the morning of the show, but I didn't want to risk it.

On with the Show!
A little bit before the show started, there was a movie showing of skiing accidents, funny things that happened to people, and things of that nature. It got us to relax and prepared us for the crazy show that was about to happen. There was an opening act of a regular stand up comedian. I found him pretty funny but cannot remember his name. He was a great person to start the show as he talked a lot about Vegas and things specific to vacationers which really made the audience get into the show.

Then Carrot Top comes out... and so does his boxes and boxes of props! For those of you who don't know, Carrot Top's main deal is to joke about current events through the use of props, costumes, and sometimes pictures that appear on a large screen. He is an interesting looking character as he is short, has curly floppy red hair, a muscle-bound body, and a unique sort of face. He can make some pretty dang ugly facial expressions when he wants to. Carrot Top has been around for awhile so if you don't know who he is then look him up! I'm sure you tube has some samples of his jokes.

As soon as he comes out, he gets right into the jokes. Joke after joke, prop after prop. There is some continuity but not much. The humor is more in the random things he talks about and never knowing what prop he will pull out next! Anyone who is in the news will be picked on! Even news that just happened in the last few weeks will be included in his show. He even comments that if you didn't get one of jokes then you should READ THE PAPER! That means, if you are not updated on current events, you may not find his show that funny. I am relatively updated so I did get most of the jokes and did laugh a lot from start to finish. Since 90% of his act is based on recent events, that means next time you see him it may be a completely different line up of jokes! I will definitely see his show again whenever I have the chance for this very reason. He may use some older jokes, but most are so recent that you have to wonder how he finds the time to make all these props AND watch all that news!

Like I said, he goes right into the jokes, so you have to keep up. He goes from one topic to the next with ease and only a few pauses in-between. Don't expect to stop laughing much at all. Since he relies mostly on props, there isn't a lot of set up for the jokes. Instead a lot of them are one-liners with a prop at the end so you can laugh and laugh and laugh. Most of the props are just so ridiculous - this guy must have one twisted mind to come up with them.

The show is 18 and up only which I really appreciated. This is Vegas for goodness sakes! No need for little kids and a PG rated comedy show. His show really wasn't dirty, just some swear words thrown in, and since there were no kids allowed he could say whatever he wanted without worrying about offending anyone.

My One Wish that would have made it even better
I did hope he might do autographs or pictures after the show. Since there are not many people in the theater, I figured it wouldn't take too much time for this. However, the show just ended and boom... no more jokes. He does this show almost every night so he can't be expected to take pictures on a nightly basis, but it would still had been cool!

The End!
The show does run almost every night so if you want to wait until you get to Vegas to buy tickets, you can probably find at least one night that is open. Due to our busy schedule, I only had the one night open so I booked my tickets in advance. In comparison to other comedy shows I've seen, Carrot Top was very very near the top, however Carlos Mencia still holds the top spot for best comedy show I've seen to date. If you like jokes about politics, celebrities, news stories, and recent events... then Carrot Top is your man. Look him up in Vegas, or wait to see where his next home will be! Enjoy!!
