The Honda Civic Coupe HF Regular model had 40/48 MPG. Now that's pretty hard to beat. It's better than the average car we have today and the car was made over 21 years ago. Don't believe me?

There's your proof! That's just one of the top mileage I read up on. I'm sure there's more! Remember, a classic car is all the way up to 1997 which may seem very recent but that's the classification insurance companies make.
There's another car, the Suzuki SA10 also made in 1985 but their mileage is only 39/47 which is pretty good too! That's not quite as good as the Honda Civic but its pretty close!
In 1986 the Nissan Sentara comes pretty close with 37/45. It's not quite as good but it's still better than average and one of the top classic cars so far!
The Pontiac Firefly ties with the Nissan Sentara in 1986 as well.
You're in for the shock of your life. In 1986, the Chevy Sprint ER got 44/53. Made in 1986, that's the best of 1985 and 86. However, the Honda Civic Coupe has improved in 1986 to go up to 42/51. This is over 20 years ago and cars back then were making this kind of mileage, Why not now?
However, in 1987, for some reason the Chevrolet Sprint ER goes down to 44/51 but not very far down. Still very good.
Jumping up to 1997 just to compare and see if there's anything in that year to be proud of just like 1985,86 and 87!
In 1997, all the gas saving cars are gone. The gas saving idea is gone. The best kind of car for saving money on gas that's made in 1997 is a Geo.
The Geo Metro gets about 37/44 which is NOWHERE near as good as the other cars but it's the best of its year.Hope this was interesting. Once again, remember that there's not a lot of information on cars online for any car before 1985.
