Casa Grande Mountain Retreat in Puerto Rico Review

If you are looking to take a different type of trip to Puerto Rico, consider staying in the mountains rather than on the beaches. They are less populated so you will be able to enjoy even more peace and quiet. The Casa Grande Mountain Retreat was rated the number seven hotel in Puerto Rico on tripadvisor.com. At about $80 per night, staying at Casa Grande will give you a new perspective on the island for a budget price. The hotel is located in Utuado, which is in a valley of the central mountains of Puerto Rico.

The retreat is small with only 20 rooms so it feels like you always have a lot of privacy. Each room has its own balcony and hammock for relaxing and taking in the beautiful views of the mountains. There is also a small outdoor pool with great views.

The hotel is out in the mountains so the ride there is on some twisty and turny roads, which can either be seen as fun or scary depending on your outlook. Once you reach the resort, you will probably not want to travel anywhere else during your stay. This is the kind of place you will probably only want to stay for a night or two because there is not much around in the way of entertainment. There are some parks and forests nearby if you are into hiking and exploring. The resort offers yoga classes each morning. Guests can go bird watching and stroll through the botanical gardens. Keep in mind there is no internet or TV as the resort is meant to be a relaxing getaway.

If you have a major problem with bugs, Casa Grande is not the place to stay. You are out in the mountains so you can expect bugs when you step outside and often in your room at night since they are drawn toward the light. We even had a couple small lizards in our room.

The rooms and decorations were very basic but they were kept clean. When you make reservations, request one of the higher up cabins because you will get better views from there.

The on-site restaurant had tasty food which is a good thing because it is really the only convenient place to eat. They made many local dishes and had vegetarian options which I appreciated.

The staff in the resort was average. No one really went out of their way to make you feel welcome and they did not have very good recommendations for things to do in the area when we asked at the desk.

Overall, I would recommend Casa Grande to people looking for a different view of the island than they would get from a traditional beach resort. I suggest you spend a short stay here as part of a longer trip to Puerto Rico.
