The Cascade Community Theatre put on a free performance of their play, "Shrew'd", in Carnation Washington last Friday and Saturday. The performance was held on Carnation's new permanent outdoor stage, across from HopeLink at the intersection of Bird and Stossel. The evening started with musical entertainment and proceeded into the wonderful performance by this talented all volunteer group. The play, an interpretation of the Taming of the Shrew adaptation seen in the old eighties television series, Moonlighting, was directed by Richard Greenfield and produced by Tracy Paddock-Beam.

The new stage they performed on, owned by the City of Carnation, is evidently going to remain for future outdoor entertainment. This is a great location, just one block from both Main Street and the bus stop. Carnation can look forward to more outdoor events now that there is a set location for entertainment.

With eleven actors, including Jeremy Robkin as the greedy rascal turned model husband, Petruchio, and Wendy Habek as the smart and sharp tongued Katherina, the play was hilariously funny, alternating anachronistic jokes with the language of Shakespeare. Gannon Kelly and Deirdre Greenfield did a great job as the star-crossed lovers Lucentio and Bianca, waiting to see if Baptista's deal would pan out for them. Pulling double-duty as an amusing Priest and a Mom, Suzan Greenfield, had one less job than her talented daughter, Kira Greenfield, playing first a child, then a stable boy, a messenger and then back to the child. Three energetic townsmen were played with rambunctious joy by Gibson Lisk, Chuck Young and Will Scafer. Emily Humberstone rounded out the cast with her amused but patient barmaid role and her double duty as a narrator.

The CCT (Cascade Community Theatre) group is supported by some indoor performance ticket sales but largely by donations, including equipment and labor. They also have several more performances lined up this 2008 season. On October 24-26 they will be putting on "12 Angry Men", a look at the American judicial system, known for the movie version of the same name, staring Henry Fonda. Then for the Holidays they will be running with the classic, "It's a Wonderful Life". In the fall of 2009 they are planning on Ophelia Thinks Harder, another farce on Hamlet written from the viewpoint of Ophelia.

If you missed their performance this past weekend, the Cascade Community Theatre will be doing another performance of "Shrew'd" on August 2nd at the Kokopelli Gardens, at 14520 284th Ave. N.E. in Duvall, WA. It is a short play, which will only take about an hour of your time, but one definitely worth the effort to get there and see it.

I really like to learn about these events that I'd never know about without reporters like you on the local scene.

A correction on this article: The part of the Barmaid and narrator I listed as Emily Humberstone were actually played by Jane Pattinson. My apologies to Jane and kudos on the wonderful job she did pitching in for Emily. A true "the show much go on" attitude!
