Casey Abrams Cut on 'American Idol' On April 28, 2011

The Unkindest Cut of All

Connie Wilson
Fox, Thursday, April 28, 2011, 8 PM (ET) Tonight's elimination of Casey Abrams on "American Idol" ranks right up there (in miscarriages of justice) with kicking Pia Tuscano off a few weeks ago. While it was good to see that the few girls in the competition were not eliminated, kicking off the most talented musician in the bunch was a bonehead play foisted on the rest of us by teenyboppers.

There is only one other explanation for Casey's elimination, and that is song choice. Casey has a known fondness for pulling song's by artists like Nat King Cole out of the closet, dusting them off, and singing them, when nobody under the age of 20 has ever heard of the song. "Heidi Ho," his selection on Wednesday, falls in that category, even if "Blood, Sweat and Tears" covered it

It is looking more and more likely that James Durbin will be able to take it all, but I retain my feeling that it may well be a mano-a-mano sing-off with two male contestants, most probably Scotty McReery, who seems bulletproof, and James Durbin. Haley is good enough to be one of the two final contestants, but teen-age girls are in the drivers' seat this season, and look what they did to Pia Toscano. Or, for that matter, to Casey Abrams on tonight's show.

Early in the program the 6 remaining contestants sang a medley of Carole King songs including "It Might As Well Rain Until September," "Take Good Care of My Baby," "One Fine Day," Go Away, Little Girl," "Too Late Baby, though We Really Did Try to Make It" and it is not unkind to say they have sounded better singing by themselves.

Crystal Bowersox, runner-up from Season 9, performed. Bruno Mars sang. And then the ax fell on Casey who performed his final song, "I Put A Spell on You."

This miscarriage of justice makes me almost as upset as last year's "Dancing with the Stars" fiasco that saw Bristol Palin carried for so long for purely political reasons. I suggest that "American Idol" and "Dancing with the Stars") find some way to put in some more quality controls. It's getting ridiculous.

My daughter said she only watches for Casey, so there goes one dedicated viewer, and I quit watching "DWTS" after last year's foolishness.
