Casey Abrams Odds of Winning American Idol

Jimmy Boyd
Casey Abrams is a 19-year-old singer from Idyllwild, California, currently competing for a spot in the voting rounds of the 10th season of American Idol. According to JoesPlaceBlog, Casey has made the Top 40. He has also been featured on one of the early American Idol commercials for Season Ten. It is difficult to assess Casey's talent level at this point because there are not many publicly available performances online. So this is a very preliminary analysis of his chances of winning American Idol for the tenth season.

Update: I just watched Casey's audition in Austin. It was simply awesome as I expected it would be. He sang Ray Charles' "I Don't Need No Doctor." Casey's personality doesn't scream "star," but his voice screams "superstar" to me. I still expect him to have an uphill battle due to image. But he is firmly my favorite so far.

First, the short clip of his initial audition on the AI commercial is very short but very impressive. Casey has an exceedingly powerful voice and seems to have good control of it at the same time. His tone is also fine if not spectacular. You can see him as the third contestant in the commercial linked to in the Resources below.

Now, it is usually difficult to assess based on such a small clip, and this is a big mistake that a lot of Idol watchers make. It is fairly easy sometimes for the show to edit and find a few seconds of amazing singing, but interpreting and delivering an entire song is a different story. Fortunately, we know from at least one video online that Casey Abrams seems to be a legit musician and skilled singer, not just a guy with a huge set of lungs. You can see his "L-O-V-E" performance in the Resources below. Casey plays multiple instruments and can mix it up with louder and more subtle notes.

Thus, judging from what we know so far, Casey certainly has the musical and singing talent to make a run on American Idol. Now, we just need to see if he gets put in the voting rounds and has consistent performances.

By way of comparison, contestants that look like Casey have found AI voters to be less than enthusiastic for the most part. Apart from Scott Savol, who finished an admirable 5th place in Season 4, even talented singers like Sundance Head and Chris Sligh have been mentioned as early favorites but quickly cut by the voters.

It seems that image plays a big part in Idol voting. If Casey remains consistent, viewers who watch the show for good singing can only hope he builds a good fan base to make a run for the money. Unfortunately, history suggests that he will need to hit home runs on a regular basis to stick around for any lengthy period of time on AI. It is so obvious that virtually no person generally perceived as being "fat" except Ruben Studdard has made a Top-3 run on Idol (I suppose we could count Melinda Doolittle here, but that's a woman who arguably should have won and only finished 3rd). The numbers are undeniable. Casey will probably have that overall perception, so he needs to wow the crowd virtually every week to have a chance. Meanwhile, someone like Casey James can have one average week after another and sail into the Top 3 virtually unscathed.

Note:

I personally think Casey looks like the average American, and that should be good enough to get votes for talent in a singing contest. After all, this is not a bodybuilding or bikini contest. But that's not always the reality. A bit of a makeover and some strategic clothing design choices might go a long way toward improving his image. But will he even want to make those changes? If he wants to win Idol, a makeover is probably a must.

So the talent seems to be there for Casey Abrams to make a deep run on Idol. From what I have seen, I would put him as a personal early favorite. But he will need to be consistently fantastic across all genres and performances to even have a chance if the history of image-centric Idol voting rears its head once again. The odds of that are very high, so Casey will have a huge struggle trying to build a fan base and win American Idol's 10th season.

I'd love to see him win, too. In my mind, he's the most musically talented one on the show this season, even though he doesn't have the best voice. Sometimes the audience votes for the one they think is the underdog, and that might help Casey.
