Casey Anthony Trial Update for June 30, 2011: Will the Defense Rest?

Abby Greenhill

The Casey Anthony trial has had its twists, turns, tears and turmoil. From George Anthony's compelling account of his suicide note and how he wanted to join Caylee Marie in death, to Cindy Anthony's frantic call to report that the little girl had been missing for a month, to the stone-cold face of Casey Anthony.

Judge Perez asked the defense when they would finish up their case and attorney Baez indicated that they would be able to accomplish that on Thursday. Ok, today is Thursday and we are going on the assumption that if they defense rests today, that there is no way Casey Anthony will take the stand today. With that said, who knows for sure if she will or not. Will the defense throw a monkey wrench into the mix?

The way it works is that if Casey Anthony wants to take the stand she will. It is up to the defendant to talk or not. But if she does take the stand today, it will most likely change the timetable that was discussed. The way it stood on Wednesday was that if the defense finished up on Thursday, then closing arguments would happen over the weekend and the case would hit the jury on Monday, July 4, 2011. Judge Perry went as far as to tell both sides not to make plans for Sunday or Monday.

What we will be waiting to hear today are the words, "The defense rests." That will mean that the defense team has finished, they have done their job. But have they? The rumor mill says the defense did an awful job. Baez didn't come across as a very good defense attorney. But was that his plan? Does Casey Anthony realize how bad of a situation she is in? Who really knows the ins and outs of the minds of these people?

George Anthony broke down on the stand, Cindy Anthony broker down on the stand, Lee Anthony broke down on the stand. The Casey Anthony trial may be winding down but is there more dirt to be uncovered? George admitted that he bought a gun to try to force Casey's friends to talk. Cindy Anthony told authorities that the trunk of Casey's car smelled like a dead body. The meter reader was accused of planting the remains, not just finding them.

Without a smoking gun was there enough evidence presented to prove without a reasonable doubt that Casey Anthony murdered her daughter? There are 12 people, and only 12 people, who will decide that.

According to the state, Casey Anthony murdered her daughter. According to the defense, the little girl died in a swimming pool accident that George covered up.

There is only one person who can tell the true story, and that person is Casey Anthony, but will she tell all today and change the course of the trial? Is she capable of telling the truth? Time will tell.
