Casey's Turn to Swing

Katie Decker
Mighty Casey was to be the hero of the Mudville baseball game. But fate had other plans in store for him.

The baseball game had not been going the way Mudville fans had hoped it would. With one inning left, the score was four to two. There were two outs. And two more batters to go before Casey finally got his turn.

The fans pulled out their hair in frustration and anticipation. Flynn and Blake had to bat first. Many wanted to give up hope right there.

But somehow, through the grace of God, they made it on base. Finally, Casey got his turn. The game was as good as in the bag for Mudville.

Casey stepped up to the plate. He played up to the crowd. He toyed with the pitcher. He did everything but stick out his tongue and sing "Na nana nana na" at him. And then it happened.

"Strike one," the umpire yelled.

No worries. No doubt he'd let the next one fly.

The next pitch came. And went. "Strike two!"

The fans sat on the edge of their seat, biting their finger, and some, their toenails off. What was Casey doing?

The third pitch came. Casey swung the bat as if his life depended on it, ready to send the ball into outer space. But the only thing he got a piece of was dust, which I must say, did sail right out of the ballpark, never to be seen again.

Mudville lost, the final score still at four to two.
And mighty Casey doesn't seem so mighty anymore.
