Congress Passes $2 Billion Extension; Buyers Have Weekend to Trade in Qualifying Cars in Cash for Clunkers Program
The Cash For Clunkers Program 2009, which was funded for $1 billion has already reached its limit, been almost suspended, has been extended by Congress with another $2 billion. The Cash For Clunkers Program received an unprecedented and quick response, blowing through the billion-dollar funding in six days as people attempted to quickly cash in on the vouchers from the government worth up to $4500 on selected cars (clunkers). As part of the government's stimulus program, it was designed to provide an economic infusion into the ailing car manufacturing and dealership industries. And it just might have done that...
When rumors and news stories began to circulate that the government program was running out of money, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs, said, "Auto dealers and consumers should have confidence that all valid CARS transactions that have taken place to date will be honored."
The Obama administration began working desperately to add more money to the program. By Friday afternoon, they had secured additional funding. "If you were planning on going to buy a car this weekend," Gibbs said Friday, "using this program, this program continues to run. If you meet the requirements of the program, the certificates will be honored."
Gibbs went on to tell CNN, "This program appears to be a success for car buyers, car dealers, car companies and taxpayers."
What it comes down to is, if you want to buy a new car under the Cash For Clunkers Program 2009, you must own one of the qualifying cars (and it must run).
Just for the heck of it, this writer checked the list. My 1996 Chevrolet S10 is not on the list, but I wasn't actually planning on going the Cash For Clunkers route, so I wasn't disappointed. However, there are hundreds of qualifying cars on the list and, if you are so inclined, taking a look at the Cash For Clunkers qualifying cars list might be a good idea.
It is definitely a great option for those in the market. Depending on the vehicle you have and the vehicle you want, you can get a rebate voucher for up to $4500, which can be several times the Kelly Blue Book trade-in value for your car.

Post a CommentThis program sucks because a lot of nice low mileage vehicles and very nice ones as well got crushed and the poeple that traded them in as well is crazy. I would NEVER turn my truck in to this cash for clunker program. There is thousands and thousands of vehicles out there still that is getting 10-17 mpg. I don't see nothing accomplished with this program. This program makes people buy a new car and to have car payments every month and that people don't want at all. I wish this program never started because like I wrote a lot of nice low mileage vehicles got crushed to where they can be reused and some vehicles had eta of 17 mpg. Thank you!!!
I go get my registration sticker receipts tomorrow and will find out if I will be disqualified from this program because of possibly registering my vehicle one month late. that will be very frustrating to miss out because of that reason alone. it seem unfair.

Great article. It does seem a shame not to salvage the good parts. Could be a good export business.
The destruction of these 'clunkers' is beyond wasteful when the parts can be salvaged to repair older cars that still run (or is that part of an advancing agenda to eradicate internal combustion engines? (just a thought)). So, if they're destroying them all, I gotta ask: Why then, does it really matter if the 'clunker' runs?
