Casino Etiquette

Have More Fun Gambling!

Lee Keel
As a former employee for many years for numerous casinos in the table games area, I learned from the inside the ins and outs of proper etiquette and manners in gambling to make the experience enjoyable for everyone. These tips should be passed on to the public, and if you choose to apply these tips, you will make everyone a lot happier at the table in which you play.

First off, while the concept of a "team" is commonly adapted at a table game, it really isn't the case. While some decisions made by others can affect the outcome of others play, criticizing the play of others only leads to resentment amongst the players, and makes for an uncomfortable situation. So, keep your opinions to yourself. If you are really that bothered by someone else's play, leave and go to another table. You aren't obligated to stay and play with the people who are angering you.

Secondly, even after the widespread expansion across the United States, there are people who still don't know that the dealers are working for tips. People are under the assumption that the casino itself supplements the salary of the dealers, when in fact; this is the farthest from the truth. They are in a customer service position, and are working very hard for you to have a great time at their table. People still assume that dealers are strictly out for the best interest of the casino, and like to see people lose. This couldn't be farther from the truth. Dealers know that when people are having a good time and winning, the chances of tipping increasing are greater. They are there merely to provide a service within the stringent guidelines of dealing the game provided by the casino. Lastly, try to avoid confrontations with people who could potentially be solving a problem that arises. Supervisors are there to resolve any problems that may foster due to a mistake in dealing or some sort of conflict. While supervisors are bound by the same stringent rules as the dealer, they have a bit more leeway in resolving problems, and having a good relationship with them may benefit you in the long run.

at a poker table, play your cards, keep your mouth shut unless you're laughing, and rake the pots. Don't berate anyone, don't complain about bad beats, and count your cash on the way home.
