Casinos Around the Detroit Area

The Metro Detroit area offers a number of options for Casino gambling, dining and entertainment. There are three Casinos located in close proximity to each other in downtown Detroit, one in Windsor Ontario Canada, as well as a number of options further out.

MGM Grand: The MGM Grand is located in Downtown Detroit. It is one of the nicest in the area with a large variety of 4000 slots and many table games. It is always decorated in a seasonal theme outside. The inside is equally appealing. The casino features three top notch restaurants as well as a nice selection of casual dining choices. There is a Sushi Bar upstairs in the IGNITE club. Service and food at the Saltwater Restaurant is beyond compare. They also have Wolfgang Puck and Bourbon Steak.

Motor City: The Motor City Casino is also located in Downtown Detroit in the historic Wagner Baking company building, built in 1915. It really catches your eye if you drive by on the freeway, especially at night when it is all lit up. The Motor City is newly renovated and has a large selection of 2500 slots on 100,000 square feet of gaming space. They have a smoke free poker room and a 1500 seat theatre. It is a bit dark inside if you like that atmosphere. It has been dubbed the Casino with the best buffet by most Detroiters.

Greektown: The Greektown Casino is located in the popular tourist area of Greektown. It is adjacent to the Athenium Hotel. It is smaller that Motor City and the MGM Grand with 2600 slots in a smaller area; and it is the only one of the three that does not offer a non smoking area anywhere in the Casino so prepare to experience a lot of smoke. It is conveniently located near a people mover station and the legendary Cajun eatery, Fishbones.

Caesars Windsor: The Casino Windsor was recently purchased by Caesars and underwent a great transformation. It is palatial like Caesars in Las Vegas. The décor is naturally very Romanesque. It is very similar in style to the Caesars in Vegas. This is a non smoking Casino for those who are tired of smoky air in the Casinos. The Casino features excellent entertainment and also has a hotel and several dining choices. This Casino offers 2600 slot machines.

Firekeepers: Firekeepers Casino is located near Battle Creek Michigan and is a 2 hour drive West from Detroit. The machines are new and shiny inside. It is very large and bright with a selection of 2680 slots and a few table games. They use a lot of red and fire references. The Buffet looks like a cafeteria with very little ambiance but the food was OK. There are 8 dining choices. There are several casual dining choices there as well. They seem to have a lot of penny games. They also offer a lot of multi-denominational games.

Soaring Eagle: This is a great venue. Soaring Eagle is about 2 hours north from Metro Detroit in Mount Pleasant Michigan, home of Central Michigan University. The Casino is very nice with a very large, diverse collection of 4400 slot machines. They offer table games and BINGO also. The restaurants are excellent and the rooms are also 5 star. They have an art gallery with unique Native American artwork. The Casino is located adjacent to the Ziibiwing cultural center. The Firefly buffet is tastefully decorated and offers great food. They frequently offer popular entertainers in their theatre. Sinbad is featured for November.

Little River: Little River is located 4 hours North of Detroit in Manistee. It is operated by Native Americans also, the Little River band of Ottawa Indians. They have a 1700 seat theatre and they have a selection of 1350 slots. It is smaller than Soaring Eagle and Firekeepers. They are located in Manistee. The majority of their entertainment is Country music.

My favorites are Soaring Eagle and the MGM Grand because that is where I win most frequently and they have the widest choice of slots. I also really enjoy the dining and ambiance at both. Both have sizeable non smoking areas and they both offer excellent entertainment. Casino Windsor is also exceptional if you can endure the hassle at the border.
