Caster Semenya - Intersex and Going for the Gold

Stacey Doyle
Caster Semenya is a middle distance runner and world champion from South Africa. Recently I referenced Caster Semenya in an article I wrote entitled, "Intersex". Due to gender issues and tests, it was questioned whether Caster Semenya would keep the gold medal she won in the 800 metres at the 2009 IAAF World Championships in Athletics in Berlin.

The Examiner reports Caster Semenya will keep the gold medal and prize winnings she earned back in August. They also reported the South African Sports Ministry indicated Caster Semenya's gender tests will remain confidential. I was pleased to see Caster Semenya was finally allowed to enjoy her hard-earned victory without public probing.

The Caster Semenya win is a victory on another level. Intersex people are a part of our population. They deserve to have productive, successful lives without judgments or irrational questioning. Caster Semenya is a shining example of what a person can do. Check out Wikipedia to read more about Caster Semenya and her accomplishments.

Intersex people should not face prejudice because of public ignorance. They deserve health care, equal opportunity and to live peacefully and happily. Caster Semenya is an inspiration to us all.
