Casting Your Vote - Deciding Which Presidential Candidate to Support in the 2008 Election

Randa Morris
With the 2008 presidential election just around the corner, many Americans are still undecided as to which candidate should garner their support.

Now more than ever it is vital that American citizens be informed about presidential candidates, and where they stand in regards to issues that will affect America's future. Decisions regarding the war in Iraq, an impending conflict with Iran, National Health Care, citizenship for illegal immigrants and privatization of Social Security are just some of the major issues that America will be facing in the months ahead.

Concerned citizens are faced with the challenge of selecting their particular candidate, in the presence of mass media advertising, campaign slogans, smear campaigns and other political "Hype." Many Americans are unsure as to where certain candidates stand on the political issues that are of major concern to them. This makes it difficult to know which candidate to vote for.

Additionally, the candidates with the most money often receive the most amount of press coverage and media time- while qualified candidates, with less campaign funds, are rarely mentioned. Many American citizens do not even know the names of ALL of the candidates vieing for election, but can only list the candidates whom are most talked about in the main stream media. These are, not surprisingly, the candidates with the most campaign funds.

If Americans hope to change the present course that this country is on, then it becomes important that they change the typical way that they decide on, and vote for presidential candidates. Vajoe.com is making an effort to do just that. Through a series of questions regarding views on what most voters believe are the major political issues, vajoe is able to match visitors to their web-site with the candidate that best reflects their personal views on these issues. The site, originally established for veterans, military personnel, and their families offers this "candidate matching service" free of charge to all it's visitors. Once on the site, you will be asked to state your position on everything from abortion rights to stem cell research, the Iraq war, and many other pertinent issues. You will also be asked to "rank" the issue in regards to it's importance to you- low, medium, or high. After answering all of the questions, you will receive a "recommended candidate" and information on the percentage of matched viewpoints- as well information regarding which issues the candidate agrees and disagrees with you about. Once you have received your "best candidate match" you can also choose to search out more in depth information about the candidate on your own.

Vajoe.com's "Candidate Calculator" may be taking the first step towards requiring candidates to run on 'the issues', rather than on all the political "Hype". While the site was designed for use by current and ex-military personel, it is not run by, and has no affiliation with the US government, or any branch of the military. Concerned citizens have free access to the site, and are welcome to use all of the services provided. The web-site makes it easy for anyone to find out just where the 2008 presidential candidates stand on the issues that mean the most to them, giving Americans more power than ever before to make an informed decision at the voting polls.

  • What is a candidate calculator?
  • Is vajoe changing the way Americans pick their candidates?
Although vajoe.com is a web-site which was designed for veterans, military personel, and their families, it has no affiliation with the US government, or any branch of the United States military.

Thanks for this article, Randa. I tried vajoe, but I don't match with the person I plan to vote for. It's a good start.
