For starters, what is a match 3 game?
Core gameplay typically remains the same for any of the titles, and is based on matching colored objects such as orbs or gems in order to eliminate them from the game board. As removing these objects only makes way for new objects to appear, the goal is to make the best and highest number of color combinations possible in order to earn the highest score. Various power-up objects are usually available or earned throughout the game that eliminate objects based on a certain special ability, such as exploding.
So what sets the games apart?
As the core gameplay is usually close to the same, titles based on a theme, or included mini-stories or achievements usually sets them apart.
In Woodville Chronicles, players embark on match 3 fun in order to build a town. When a round is completed, earnings can be used in order to purchase resources such as buildings. Other features of gameplay include a rotating board that helps to mix things up, bonus levels that unlock additional board features, and a quick switch feature that allows for changing the available modes of gameplay on the fly. Vivid graphics and soothing music also make for an enjoyable and casual gaming experience.
The Golden Tome, which holds six centuries of knowledge, must be protected from evil in The Legend of the Golden Tome. In this game, players will encounter match 3 challenges while traveling the Druid lands in order to locate crystals that are required to find the Tome. Featured in the title is also the popular hidden object style of play, where a laundry list of items must be found on a screen that is busily occupied. Celtic music accompanies play, and graphics in this one are top notch.
The world may never see a new year ever again in Season Match: Curse of the Witch Crow. That is, unless gamers can win at match 3 tasks, complete mini-games, and solve hidden object challenges, in effort to release the months of the year that the evil witch has captured. Starting with January, each month's spirit (which holds a special ability to be used in play) must be unlocked. The match 3 play is standard and entertaining, and although the hidden object portions of the game are not overly complex to solve, they add a quick change to standard play.
