Just like you, your cat's health needs are also vital. The number one source for learning about your cat's health conditions is of course your veterinarian. However, it is wise to learn something's on your own. Having a lot of appointments can get expensive. Money can be saved for something that can be prevented or corrected on your own. There is one common condition in cats that you may over look and that is hairballs.

Cats cleaning themselves mainly cause hairballs. Even though cats do not like water, they like to keep clean by licking their fur. Cats shed their fur a lot and will swallow it. Majority of the fur will naturally pass through, but sometimes their hair becomes tangled in their stomach. Big balls of fur will accumulate causing it to be too big to flow through their system. Most times a cat will throw up these types of hairballs.

It is estimated that about a quarter of all cats digestive blockages are from hairballs. These hairballs are unable to pass on its own or removed by the cat, causing the cat to be very ill. A hairball as big as a baseball in the cat's stomach is not unheard of. A size too big can possibility cause death.

With a watchful eye, there are symptoms you can look for. Some indications are cylinder shaped hairballs, constipation, hard stool with hair, dry coat, frequent coughing after meals, loss of appetite, swollen abdomen, depression, and/or lethargy. If your cat is experiencing some or all of these symptoms, it is best to call your veterinarian right away.

There are ways to help prevent your cat from taking in too much fur. Brushing is a great way to do just that, plus your cat will enjoy the time spent with you. Your veterinarian might subscribe a flavored medication that contains non-digestible oil lubricants. A high-fiber diet with perhaps a fiber supplements, or specialized formulated cat food. There are home remedies that can be found on the Internet, but it is highly suggested you call your veterinarian first to prevent any other problems for your cat's digestive system.

While it is great to save money, it is more important to keep your cat healthy. If you have any doubts about your cat's conditions or want to try solutions, call your veterinarian. Hairballs are normal for most cats, but can be a medical problem. Provide a nutritional diet, brush their coat daily, and recognize trouble. With these simple preventive measures, you will help your cat with their hairballs.
