Identity theft can be lucrative and it can be easy to pull off, that is why it has become the fastest growing crime in America, occurring once every 79 seconds. Taking your credit monitoring seriously is the first step in protecting yourself from identity theft. Your credit score is more important than ever to your financial well-being. You need to pay close attention to what your credit report contains. Although monitoring your credit may not stop your identity from being stolen, it will lessen financial difficulties that you might incur by being detected sooner. There are a variety of ways to monitor your credit. The first, monitor it yourself. It may take quite a bit of time on your part, in order to catch any discrepancies it is vital check your credit report often and knowing exactly what to check for. The second choice would be to purchase a credit monitoring service to do the monitoring for you. This provides convenience for you as you can live your life while the monitoring service is working in the background, providing the most important part of your identity theft prevention. One advantage to a monitoring service is that monitoring is much more likely to be more frequent than if you are monitoring it yourself. Credit monitoring companies will usually alert you to important activity such as credit inquiries, negative information, employment changes, new accounts, address changes, if suspicious activity is detected you are usually notified within 24 hours. What a credit monitoring service does not do is take the action for you. You will need to be responsible in reporting an identity theft, hopefully you won't ever have too!

Because your credit history plays such a big role in your life, whether it's buying a home, buying a car, applying for a credit card or applying to rent or lease an apartment, it is vital to manage and monitor your credit to help achieve your financial goals. Check for misleading, incomplete or false information on your credit report. Studies show that 70 to 80 percent of all credit reports may contain errors. You can obtain a copy of your credit report from your financial lender. The danger of not monitoring your credit comes down to the simple fact that if your identity is stolen it could take months or even years to clear your name and reclaim your credit.

Thanks for the info. So far I had one credit card stolen. Thankfully they only charged $85. I always check over my bill. Visa's investigators were so helpful and took it off my card immediately. They said a lot of people don't even look at their credit cards so theif's get away with a lot of crime! Especially if they only add one charge at a time! They were traced and caught! Yay! Yes, identity theft is scary!
