Cathy Comic Spoofed Again by SNL with Timberlake Assist

When it comes to comics, Cathy has been an institution for over three decades. But a cutting edge topic of satire, Cathy is not. One wouldn't expect a 33 year old comic strip to be a topic on a show like Saturday Night Live. However, Cathy, her various quirks, catch phrases and weight have been spoofed on SNL twice now. Cathy returned to Weekend Update with a familiar special guest as her husband.

Cathy is a character who worries and frets so much, she is easy to make fun of. So naturally, SNL has had Cathy played by a man. Andy Samberg first played Cathy on a Weekend Update spoof in the season premiere.

Somehow, SNL spoofed the comic character, that's almost as old as the show itself, again last night. The occasion was a recent survey from Cadbury Daily Milk, ranking the sexiest cartoon characters ever.

Of course, a character like Cathy is not traditionally sexy for a comic strip character, so SNL had Samberg's Cathy reflect on how she finished last in the poll. Cathy's usual jokes about her weight, and her "Acks!" were performed, until her husband came by.

The husband was not played by an SNL cast member, but somehow who shows up so much on SNL nowadays, he might as well be one. Justin Timberlake made his second SNL cameo of the season as Cathy's equally nerdy husband.

However, even his devotion to Cathy was ruined by a cameo from Jessica Rabbit, who topped Cathy in the poll and in love. "Baby got Ack!" according to Timberlake.

Cathy joins the other cartoon characters like Betty Boop, the Cadbury Caramel Rabbit, and Cinderella in being left behind in sexiness by Jessica Rabbit. But none of them were married to Justin Timberlake, only to lose him.

Cathy hasn't only been featured on SNL recently. Last year, there was a random bit on 30 Rock where Tina Fey yelled "Chocolate, chocolate, chocolate, ACK!!" in a Cathy-like inflection.

Somehow, Cathy has become a source of inspiration for SNL type shows, but perhaps not in the most flattering of ways. It at least gives Samberg something to do in between digital short music videos, and gave Timberlake yet another excuse to come on by.
