Cats and Computers

Lori Piper
I have had joy and stress with dealing with cats and computers. I work in a rescue and for the most part, only a small portion of our cats care to entertain themselves with the computer and me whilst I am using it. Those that do, it seems, only venture after the mouse. Okay, there has to be a reason for that name so all righty then, I deal with it.

However, we have started intaking some cats that have taken to playing with me by walking up and down the key board- some words even spell check could not figure out. But all this was well and fine as it would only be for short bursts of time. As long as I give equal attention to the felines as well as the computer, a happy medium exists and work can continue.

However, some of them (one in particular) have begun to sit atop the monitor and bless Merlin's heart- he's not graceful. Down he falls onto the keyboard and oh- what was I writing? Where did it go? A computer is not graced with the programming to adjust for cat flight or drop. Well, dealing with that "bump" just takes finesse. Pet Merlin as well as placing him on my lap takes care of his desire to take flight.

We have several that prefer not the hum of the computer screen but the warmth of the tower and they will wrap themselves around it. We have started dusting back behind there with much more frequency. Luna has decided that the top of the tower is her personal perch. This way she can be near, yet still in queen mode, to be revered from down below.

A laptop has already had to have its motherboard replaced due to the accumulation of cat hair. But my favorites are Willow and Pagan as it is their intent to wrap themselves around my legs so that when I am ready to get up, I must first pick them up and give them a cuddle.

However, I have Druid. This is by far the smartest cat I've encountered in the never-ending battle of cats vs. computers. Not only does he play with the mouse, sits atop the monitor, walks across the keyboard, lays himself down in front of the monitor blocking all view of my written words, he has learned that the mouse is the link to the cursor on the screen. He will watch my moving the mouse and then his paw will be on the screen going for the cursor. He has evolved. He has conquered. He is loved. What was I writing? Where did it go?

I thought I'd take a look at some of your older pieces. I love this! I have a computer cat too, but he sits behind my laptop. I sit on the floor typing on a coffee table. That's my desk of choice. I have neck problems, and it works best for me. Anyway, the cat is on my "desk" most of the time. I think he likes the heat the computer puts out. He gets a little too close thougj. He decides he has to have a bath, and then the laptop screen starts moving. LOL I like his company, but he's a little too close sometimes. I'm afraid the hair will take a toll on mine too one of these days. Great article. I'm glad I found it!

This is very true about cats. Sarah (my cat) is also one who has learned to not just do one thing to distract me from the computer, but she used to push the phone off of the hook when I had dial-up (which disconnected the internet). She learned (sadly, by the way) that it no longer works that way with DSL. :P However, she finds many other ways to get my attention away from the computer when she feels like it. :P

I totally relate. Its not just computers. My cat likes to plop down right on top of whatever I may be reading at the time, as well as on my keyboard. Its funny, he can be sleeping in another room, but when I get on the computer he gets right in my way.

My best friend lives in Australia, and we stay in touch mostly via yahoo IM ... he got a kitten for Christmas 2004. Now Chloe & I chat, as she walks across the keyboard and says amazing things to me! (Like "139999999999999999999999999.............")

I loved this. I can relate..I am a persian cat owner and she MUST sit in my lap while I type.
She has made many mad leaps towards the keyboard before. I manage to catch her. Whew. Great article.
