My hometown has been overrun with druggies lately, at least it appears that way. Last week a traffic stop would lead police to the Cats with No Names Sanctuary in Pine Grove, Pennsylvania.
There they would find a lot of drugs, many hypodermic needles, rotten cat food, and over 70 starving and sick cats.
Now the owner of the property says she wants all SPCA off her property by this Saturday. Apparently the lease for the Cats with No Names Sanctuary ran out this just two days ago.
The owner claims that she allowed her tenants to operate the sanctuary on her property but was no aware of any drug use.
Many of the cats found at the property were malnourished and sick. Some cats were found already dead, having starved to death. Many more have now been found to have Leukemia.
Officials found large amounts of old, rotten cat food in sheds and other storage facilities on the property. The sanctuary operator apparently had begun to sell some of the cat food for drug money, but much of it was no longer edible.
Some of the cats had begun to feast on a rotten deer carcass on the property, while nearby sat hundreds of pounds of food.
It is not immediately clear how much money was given to the sanctuary in donation form, but it has been said already that the sanctuary had many out of state donors. In one case in particular, the sanctuary was given $25,000.
It is also unclear when the sanctuary began to decline in its credibility. SPCA workers and many others in the area have stated that the sanctuary was once a legitimate facility for homeless cats.
The residents of the property remain jailed in Schuylkill County Prison, awaiting bail of $25,000 each. With the state usually accepting 10% for bail, it won't be too long until they are out. Ready to hit the streets with drugs yet again.
At the very least the residents will probably be charged with different drug counts. I am sure some form of animal cruelty charges will arise, but I wonder if an indictment of 70 animal cruelty charges would stand.
The story is sad in so many ways. Abused animals, two young people addicted to drugs so bad that they sold crates of cat food for drug money. All the while there was hundreds of pounds of food, that could have meant the difference between life and death for these cats, just feet away. Now the property owner is telling the SPCA to get off her land. Usually this would be quite understandable, but not in this case. The SPCA was trying to set up shelter on the property for the felines as many are sick ad cannot be in contact with other healthy cats.
They SPCA will continue to check into the legalities of the situation, and I hope they find a happy medium for the cats, themselves, and the property owner. If nothing else, I hope this massive local event will change the lives of two young people who apparently turned down the wrong road.
