In unrelated animal news, the Oakland Zoo in California welcome a new sun bear named Pagi this week. The one-and-a-half-year old made her debut June 18 and zoo officials said that she will slowly be introduced to the other bears to give her time to adapt to her new home, according to Tails of the City, of sfgate.com.
Sun bears have long, sickle-shaped claws that help them break open wood and tree branches.
A welcoming was held June 19 at the zoo.
In other pet news, Gaston County Animal Shelter in Charlotte, NC is in need of pet food donations.

On July 12 the Nu Campaign to Fight Pet Obesity begins. It's designed to raise awareness among pet owners about the dangers for overweight or obese pets. The 90-day program was scheduled to start the week of June 14 and end the week of Sept. 13 but the date was pushed back to July due to technical difficulties.
"Participants will be provided 90 days of free Nulo food and will weigh in at a local vet's office at the start of the program and weekly at home throughout the program and then at the vet's office again on the last day of the program," said Caroline Golon of Blogpaws. "Participants are asked to leverage as much Facebook and Twitter activity as appropriate."
Those participating will agree to take "before" and "after" photos, as well as progress pictures the day of their weigh-ins at the vet's office.
In exchange, participants will receive a healthier, happier pet, free food for 90 days, a $500 Nulo food voucher available at nulo.com, a $250 donation to the pet-related non-profit of the participant's choice, a chance to win an all-expense paid trip to New York City to have mini-interviews and be in a video shoot for the Nulo.com home page, and the opportunity to be the catalyst to help others learn more about how to fight obesity and manage ongoing wellness, according to a press release.
