Causes of Chest Hair in Women

Jody Morse
As a child, my grandfather always told me to eat my carrots because they "put hair on your chest." I, being a female, didn't want a hairy chest so I developed a childhood aversion to carrots. A hairy chest can be very embarrassing for females at any age. What causes a hairy chest in women? Does it signify any health problems? Here's what women should know about the causes of chest hair in females.

Identifying Abnormal or Excessive Chest Hair

It is important to note that most females do have some chest hair, which is referred to as vellus hair. For most women, chest hair tends to be blonder in color, very fine, and short. It generally is not noticeable. If there are large amounts of chest hair that is thick, dark, long or otherwise noticeable, it is ideal to talk to your doctor to determine the possible causes.

Causes of Chest Hair in Women

Having too much androgens, which are otherwise known as male hormones, can cause women to experience excessive and unwanted hair. This problem is referred to as hirsutism. A number of conditions can cause chest hair among women. Some of these conditions include polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), hypothyroidism, Cushing's syndrome, anorexia nervosa, and ovarian or adrenal gland tumors, according to Health Services at Colombia University.

In addition, it is important to keep in mind that certain medications can also cause women to experience a hairy chest. According to Health Services at Colombia University, certain medications that are used to treat endometriosis, fibrocystic breast disease, fungal infections, seizures, diabetes, high blood pressure and other health problems may also lead to hirsutism. Medications containing testosterone are also a common cause.

Treating Unwanted Chest Hair

Diagnosing the problem is an essential key to getting rid of unwanted chest hair. For some women, the solution may be as easy as switching to a different medication. Others may need to take an anti-androgen medication to reduce male hormone levels. To get rid of chest hair long-term, it is important for women to visit a healthcare professional for a medical diagnosis.

For temporary relief, women may want to think about shaving, plucking or waxing their chest hair. Women who would like to remove their chest hair long-term may also want to consider a more permanent method of hair removal, such as electrolysis - which is otherwise known as laser hair removal.

Overall, it is important to keep in mind that there are a number of possible causes of excessive chest hair in women. Identifying the cause plays a significant role in getting rid of chest hair long-term.
