Other names for this include vertigo, faint, woozy, unsteady among others and general it's just something that makes you take notice that something is not exactly right within your body. Most of the time dizziness occurs simply because the person experiencing this has changed from sitting to standing very quickly. Some times though it is a signal, that something is wrong within our bodies that we need to change and it's always best if symptoms reoccur frequently to consult a qualified physician.
After a person has vomited, they may experience some dizziness, as they have dehydrated themselves. This can also happen on days of too much exercise or hotter then usual days. The quick remedy is to get a drink of water when the feelings of lightheadedness have disappeared or have someone get some for you. Skip the caffeinated drinks as they do nothing by dehydrate you further, clear liquids are always the best option.
Sometimes humans get dizzy because of a drop in blood pressure. If you are currently on a medication, which regulated the blood pressure, and you are experiencing dizziness often, consult your doctor. In the meantime, get up slower. If you are lying down, do not quickly jump up and begin walking. Instead sit for a bit before standing and this will get the BP in better shape, and will eliminate the woozy feelings.
An inner ear infection will also cause a person to experience dizziness, and this would require the person to visit the doctor's office for antibiotics. Sometimes after a bout of the flu or a very bad cold people can experience lightheadedness when they change the position of their head and medically speaking this is called Labyrinthitis and this should alert the person that an inner ear infection is present.
People who have heart disease can also experience dizziness, but this is more commonly caused by the blood pressure medicines, which regulate the BP. If the dizziness is experienced with chest pain, left arm pain, jaw pain or any of the other heart attack related symptoms call 911 immediately.
